Challenge
RT developed a backend-driven digital twin simulator for ███ to optimize the global movement of supplies across multiple facilities. The tool required manual configuration and scripting, making it inaccessible to most planners and analysts.
The challenge was to design a user-friendly interface that would turn this simulation engine into an easy product enabling users to build scenarios, and extract insights without needing programming expertise.
Note: Some details have been omitted due to confidentiality; this case study focuses on the design aspects I’m allowed to share.
My Role
I led visual and UI design in Phase 1, collaborating with a senior UX designer. I created the the style guide, defined the component system, and ensured Section 508 accessibility compliance.
I also crafted key presentation decks to secure client alignment on visual direction.
During Phase 2, the senior UX designer departed the project to join another company. I stepped into a larger role leading both UX/UI across Phases 2 and 3. This included owning end-to-end design decisions, refining core flows, and expanding the product’s features to support more complex user needs.
Phase I, Visual Design System
My primary focus was to establish a visual system to translate back-end heavy tool into usable, and compliant interface.
Key contributions included:
Defining color, typography, and dashboard grid layout.
Establishing a UI design system with scalable, reusable components, ensuring accessibility compliance (Section 508).
Assisting the UX designer with key user flows, helping ensure the visuals supported the logic and structure of the simulation journey.
Creating mockups and a client-facing presentation deck to communicate design rationale and get early buy-in.
Phases II & III, UX/UI Leadership
With the design foundation in place, I led all UX/UI efforts across two key phases:
Phase II:
Advanced Scenario Builder: Created a new section for uploading and customizing transportation datasets spanning air, sea, road, and rail.
Dynamic Results View: Replaced static charts with interactive visualizations that update in real-time, allowing users to overlay and compare multiple simulations.
Improved Flow & Feedback: Enhanced the simulation setup experience through clearer data upload flows and refined error handling.
Phase III:
Bottleneck Analysis & GIS View: Focused on spatial insights feature. I designed an interactive ‘pilot view’ using GIS integration, enabling users to visualize global routes and drill into bottlenecks at the route level.
Solution
Transformed a technical simulator into a user-friendly product with data input, variable control, and interactive visual outputs.
Note: Sample data is shown for demonstration purposes only.
Results & Impact
While project data remains confidential, continued engagement across multiple phases reflected sustained client trust.
The final product earned praise from both RT and ███ for its clarity, effectiveness, and the way it empowered decision-making at scale.
Retrospective
This project sharpened my ability to design within government accessibility standards and strengthened my collaborative skills alongside systems-level thinkers from the RT team. It also gave me hands-on experience with geospatial tools expanding how I think about data visualization in high-impact environments.
